A Brief History
The Eisenhower Cooperative was organized in 1962 to provide curriculum-based services to three elementary and one high school district in south suburban Cook County. Over the next several years, the number of Eisenhower Cooperative districts grew to ten. At that time, the special education services to the ten districts were coordinated through the Southwest Cooperative. In 1972, Community High School District 218 and the nine elementary districts of the Eisenhower Cooperative initiated a study to determine the feasibility of providing decentralized special education services. In 1974, the Eisenhower Cooperative districts formally withdrew from the Southwest Cooperative. In 1975-76, the member districts served 952 children with disabilities. Currently more than 2000 children receive special education services through their local districts. In recent years, the Cooperative has significantly increased the number of programs it operates with more than 300 children directly receiving services from Eisenhower Cooperative staff.
